Just because you grazed on carefully, after the winter, you are not safeguarded against digestive disorders.
Especially in warm, rainy weather, the grass sprouts faster than you can look, and the horses eagerly graze on it.
Studies have shown that horses can increase the amount they eat four times (!) if they only have access to grass for a short time.
This means that a horse can eat as much grass in 10 minutes as it would eat in 40 minutes in summer, if the grazing times were longer.
This is not a warrant to let the horses out in the paddock for two hours! Especially with greedy eaters you should protect the intestines during the grazing on period from being overloaded with grass due to hasty eating, e.g. by using a grazing muzzle.
In our experience, the AS model from ‘Das Pferd im Blick’ has proved to be a good choice, as the reduction plates can be repeatedly adapted to the condition of the pasture and also to the horse’s ability.
This way, you can graze on slowly by increasing intervals without the horses gorging too much during the short grazing on periods.
