Detoxification for your horse

Toxins are omnipresent (widespread)

Every day horses are exposed to a multitude of toxins.

On the one hand, toxins are produced in a horse’s own metabolism, amongst other things from the breakdown of proteins and fats as waste products. On the other hand, toxins are also ingested – for example, mould found in low-quality roughage and grain, or from preservatives and colourings that are added to feed.
A healthy horse can dispose of these ingested toxins without any issues. The liver converts the toxins so they can be excreted through the urine and kidneys.

If the amount of toxins ingested exceeds the disposal capacities (a.k.a. how much can be disposed), it can cause a disturbance to the detoxification process. Feeding mouldy hay or (mostly undetected) spoiled haylage are both examples of this.
However, toxins can accumulate when the liver or kidneys are not working properly. The waste substances are stored temporarily: fat-soluble waste is stored in the fatty tissue, and water-soluble waste is stored in the connective tissue. As the body can compensate for not detoxifying properly for long periods of time, it is hard to notice at first. Unhelpfully, the blood count does not provide adequate information about how the liver and kidneys are functioning.

It is not wholly impossible to tell, however, as there are number of ‘early markers’ you can spot to indicate any issues.
These are normally visible during moulting, as this is a hard time for the liver and kidneys. Changing stables or feed, and giving medication that the horse responds badly to, all effect the detoxification process.

The Sanoanimal Detoc Cure / Treatment

Spring and autumn are the prime times to help support a horse’s detoxification function. During these times, the coat
change coincides with worming, vaccinations, dental treatments, changes of feed, and many other factors that put
strain on the liver and kidneys.
It is best to start the Sanoanimal Detox Cure / Treatment as soon as the coat starts to change; the exact time can obviously vary between each horse and the climate.
The Sanoanimal Detox Cure / Treatment was developed in a close collaboration with OKAPI GmbH. Sanoanimal’s many years of experience in helping detoxification disorders worked well with OKAPI’s knowledge of the effects herbs and minerals have on a horse’s metabolism.

Note: Before starting the Sanoanimal Detox programme, please make sure your horse’s liver is able to handle the enhanced detoxification processes. To check, you can ask your vet to do a full blood test.
The parameters of which should include: blood cells (red, white, platelets, haemoglobin), liver, kidney and muscle parameters (CK, LDH), trace elements (zinc, copper, iron, selenium), glucose and insulin.

Please make sure that your horse has constant access to hay twelve hours prior to taking the blood sample but ensure that no other feeds are given. The sample for glucose should be taken with containers using a preservative (sodium fluoride). Note: For the dosages of each product, please refer to the manufacturer’s instructions on the respective labels.

Note: Give half an ampoule of Heel’s combination remedies directly into the mouth every day for the indicated period of time.
It says on the ampoule that it is for injection, so please don’t be misled by this. It can also be given directly into the mouth or food, the effect is the same.

Note: If your quality of hay is poor, e.g. if mould has developed during storage, we also recommend the continuous use of OKAPI EndoProtect in order to bind the mycotoxins.
